Whether a pedestrian or bicyclist, being “visible” to motorists can be life saving. A crash between a bicyclist and pedestrian on a wide shoulder of Hersheypark Drive offers another lesson about visibility. Read the following account. “This crash took place on Monday the 27th of January at approximately 0620 hours on Hersheypark Drive between the Giant Center and the Hersheypark Stadium. The pedestrian was walking on the shoulder with traffic and the bicyclist was riding on the shoulder with traffic. The bicycle did have a white light to the front, the pedestrian had no lights or reflective material. The bicycle was manufactured with an electric motor. It is marketed as an electric motor assist bicycle on the report. The bicycle was going down Hersheypark Drive and at the speeds he was traveling on a dark highway, his headlight did not illuminate the pedestrian and by the time the pedestrian came into view it was too late to take any evasive action.”
