Bicycle Playground is a Reality at Coleman Memorial Park

Many months ago. SAMBA with the support of LVBC and Lebanon County’s Community Health Council worked with Coleman Park’s Board and the City to gain approval for building a “bicycle playground”.  Next, in June, 400 tons of donated dirt arrived.  Now, the dirt was moved by shoveling and machines to build the pump track.  This large pump track is specifically geared towards helping young, beginner bicyclists develop their skills. The track consists of turns, “rollers,” which are similar to speed bumps for cars, and hills for riders to pump over and through. The technique of pumping helps young bicyclists gain momentum and traction on the course and if it’s done correctly, they will not need to pedal. It also provides a full-body workout that strengthens the arms and legs and helps build endurance.  A  small balance track will  help very young children learn how to balance on their bikes as well as other basic skills even if they  are not yet pedaling.   Thanks goes out to these businesses – Umbergers, Maguire’s Ford, True Value, Leed’s Cyclery and Benchmark Construction for their in kind contributions.  The Playground is an asset for the City’s residents and many others who will discover the historic Coleman Memorial Park when they bring their children to test and improve their bicycling skills.     The ambitious goal set by Nick Loftus, Project Manager, and dedicated volunteers met their goal to open the Bicycle Playground in fall of 2020.
